Yellow-striped Bear Spider Arctosa fulvolineata
The Yellow-striped Bear Spider (Arctosa fulvolineata) is a nationally scarce wolf spider (Lycosidae) of the upper saltmarsh and brackish coastal habitats, where it hunts actively amongst the low, sparse vegetation and bare mud of the marsh surface. It is highly adapted to saline and tidally influenced conditions, and is largely confined to the coastal counties of southern and eastern England. Suffolk’s extensive estuarine saltmarshes – particularly those of the Alde–Ore, Deben, Orwell, and Stour – provide some of the most extensive areas of suitable habitat in Britain, and the county is likely to be of considerable national importance for this species. Coastal squeeze and sea-level rise pose significant long-term threats to the upper saltmarsh habitats it occupies. Image: © Bastien Louboutin, iNaturalist.
