Blue Shark

Blue Shark Prionace glauca

The Blue Shark (Prionace glauca) is one of the ocean’s most elegant pelagic predators – slender, indigo-blue, and wide-ranging across the world’s warmer seas. In British waters, it occurs offshore, primarily in the south-west, where sport fishing for the species has a long tradition. Occasional records from the North Sea – including strandings and offshore encounters near Suffolk – reflect the species’ wandering nature rather than regular residency. Blue sharks are among the most heavily fished sharks globally, primarily as bycatch, and are considered near threatened. Any record from Suffolk waters is notable and worth submitting to national shark recording databases. Image: © Kenn Papadopoulo, Naturalist.
