Suffolk Turtle Dove Survey

logoThe Turtle Dove is the UK’s fastest-declining farmland bird, and Suffolk remains one of its last significant strongholds. The species has suffered a 94% decline in UK numbers since 1995 and is considered globally vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN. This survey supports the national Operation Turtle Dove programme, which is working to reverse the species’ fortunes through habitat improvement and targeted monitoring. Recording every sighting – whether a single calling bird or confirmed breeding – helps us build an accurate picture of the Turtle Dove population in Suffolk and contributes directly to the national effort to prevent its loss as a UK breeding species.
