Borrer’s Saltmarsh-Grass Puccinellia fasciculata
Borrer’s Saltmarsh-Grass (Puccinellia fasciculata) is a scarce grass of the upper margins of saltmarshes, brackish ditches, and disturbed coastal ground. It is one of several saltmarsh grasses that can be challenging to distinguish in the field, requiring close examination of floral details. The species is predominantly coastal in Britain and has a restricted distribution nationally. Suffolk’s extensive estuarine systems – particularly the Orwell, Deben, Stour, and Alde – support areas of suitable habitat, and the county holds records of note. Coastal squeeze and sea-level rise pose potential threats to the upper-marsh habitats it occupies. Image: © Otto, iNaturalist.
