Atlantic Mackerel Scomber scombrus
The Atlantic Mackerel (Scomber scombrus) is a fast-moving, shoaling pelagic fish whose iridescent green-blue flanks make it one of the most striking species in British waters. It is seasonally common off the Suffolk coast, typically arriving inshore during summer and autumn as it follows prey fish. A popular target for shore and boat anglers, mackerel is caught in quantity from Suffolk's beaches, piers, and offshore marks during peak season. As a key prey species for seabirds, dolphins, and larger fish, its abundance has significant implications for the health of the North Sea ecosystem. Image: © Claude Nozères, iNaturalist.
