Dover Sole

Dover Sole Solea solea

The Dover Sole (Solea solea) is a prized flatfish of sandy and muddy seabeds, highly valued commercially and a significant target species for both commercial and recreational fisheries in the southern North Sea. It is regularly caught off the Suffolk coast, with local inshore vessels and boat anglers targeting the species across the county’s offshore banks and sandy ground. The southern North Sea is one of the most important sole nursery areas in European waters, and the shallow inshore zones off the Suffolk coast play a role in juvenile recruitment. Sustainable management of sole fisheries is important given the species’ economic and ecological significance in this region. Image: © Pierre Corbrion, iNaturalist.
