Porbeagle Lamna nasus
The Porbeagle (Lamna nasus) is a robust, active shark of cool, offshore Atlantic and North Sea waters, closely related to the mako and sharing its powerful, streamlined build. Once targeted by directed fisheries, populations were severely depleted, and the species is now listed as vulnerable. It occurs in North Sea water,s including the deeper offshore areas beyond the Suffolk coast, and is occasionally encountered as bycatch by commercial vessels. Sport fishing for porbeagle off the east coast of England has a historic tradition, though the species is now subject to strict fishing controls. Offshore records from Suffolk waters contribute to the national understanding of its distribution. Image: © Clinton Duffy, iNaturalist.
