Swamp Lookout Spider

Swamp Lookout Spider Notioscopus sarcinatus

The Swamp Lookout Spider (Notioscopus sarcinatus) is a rare and tiny money spider (Linyphiidae) of permanently wet fen, bog, and marsh habitats, associated with dense, low vegetation in waterlogged or seasonally flooded conditions. It is one of Britain’s most habitat-specific linyphiids, found only where hydrology is stable and the sward is consistently moist. In Suffolk, the Waveney Valley fens, coastal grazing marsh, and valley mire systems provide the most suitable conditions, and the county may hold populations of national significance. Its small size and exacting habitat requirements mean it is almost certainly under-recorded, and specialist wetland invertebrate surveys remain valuable for building a fuller picture of its distribution.
