Serrated Tongue Spider

Serrated Tongue Spider Centromerus serratus

The Serrated Tongue Spider (Centromerus serratus) is a small money spider (Linyphiidae) of damp, tussocky grassland, fen margins, and wetland habitats, associated with base-rich, permanently moist conditions. Nationally scarce, it is most likely encountered in the wet grassland and fen systems of eastern England. Suffolk’s grazing marsh, valley fen, and coastal wetland habitats – particularly those in the Waveney Valley and the estuarine levels – provide potential habitat for this inconspicuous but ecologically telling species. As with many small linyphiids of specialist wetland habitats, it is likely under-recorded, and targeted pitfall trapping in suitable fen and marsh habitats would help to establish a clearer picture of its distribution across the county.
